Winter weddings in the desert

Happy engagement season (and Happy Thanksgiving)! Should you find yourself here, newly engaged and considering an elopement this winter, congratulations! Vegas doesn’t really have a “wedding season” – and I’m often asked if it’s going to be cold or rainy or cloudy or (insert weather phenomenon here)… And the answer is….*drumroll please*….I have no idea. I’m sorry. But I can tell you that it’s totally possible to get married (even outdoors!) in Vegas in the wintertime.

Our winters are typically mild compared to where most of my clients are from. If you’re coming from the east coast, or Canada or the UK, you’ll likely be pleasantly surprised at the lovely weather we have in February. For my Australian friends, coming from summer to winter might be a little bit rough, but I promise you’ll survive. The biggest thing to contend with in the wintertime is the wind. But to be honest, it’s almost always windy here, so I warn my clients of that ahead of time, regardless of the time of year. Note the photos below. If you just roll with it and embrace the desert, the desert will embrace you right back.

windy lakebed wedding with the ever fabulous Peachy Keen Unions

wrap yourself up in a pretty stole to keep your shoulders warm

don’t take the wind too seriously

wear your hair down (or maybe half down) and love the movement the breeze creates

Now – call me so we can plan on where we’ll freeze our butts off in the wind for your big day. At least we’ll freeze and be windblown together! ♥

Elopement vibes

I’m often asked exactly how it’s possible that I can photograph so many weddings in a year (usually somewhere between 100 and 125). Yikes! But the truth is, almost all of my weddings are intimate elopements and most of those clients only need and opt for two hours of wedding coverage. It’s something that not a lot of photographers are willing to offer, especially on “prime days” (Saturdays in June, anyone?!). But I believe that beautiful wedding photography in Las Vegas should be accessible to anyone and you shouldn’t have to have a 6 or 8 hour minimum for wedding day coverage. If you’re tying the knot and want beautiful images for your walls to treasure forever, I’m your girl!

I specialize in outdoor or chapel weddings (either with or without guests) followed by a photo session for just the two of you. Lucy and Aiden actually opted for a pre-wedding session at the Springs Preserve followed by their ceremony at the Neon Museum. This gave them a chance to get the pre-ceremony jitters out before the big moment. We can structure your session however you want – traditional, funky, you name it. Helping my clients work out a timeline is absolutely one of the things I love to do. I can help you navigate the locations and time needed at each spot so that you can maximize your time (and photos!) at each place.

Can we talk about her showgirl shoes, please?

Here’s what Lucy had to say about their experience:

I really don’t know what to say – The photos are absolutely beautiful! You captured us and our day perfectly. We couldn’t be more happy. As soon as I opened the email and saw the first image of us together in Springs Preserve I started crying. Good tears I promise. We cannot thank you enough for being such a huge part of our day. We absolutely love the photos and are so happy that you were also our witness. You helped make the day absolutely perfect. I’ll be sure to write you some 5 star reviews on Facebook and The Knot so everyone else knows how wonderful you are, and next time we’re in Vegas I’ll definitely be calling you for a Boudoir shoot.

and they lived happily…

I adore this mural (and pretty much every other mural in downtown Las Vegas, to be honest). Every year, the Life is Beautiful festival comes to town and commissions pieces on the walls downtown. And every year I wonder what will change… For example, the slightly famous XOXO wall is now gone, but we have gotten a TON of bright color in its place. This “Ever After” piece (pictured above) seems to be holding strong. Let’s hope it stays that way! If you want to explore downtown with me and see all the changes made in late September, call me and we’ll make it happen!

How to elope – Vegas style

This question comes across my email more than anything else. Clients want to know what their options are for wedding in Sin City – and the truth is – the possibilities are absolutely endless. I’ve had clients that have married in elegant chapels, big country clubs, on a street corner downtown, in the middle of the desert – the list goes on and on. This post is just a quick smattering of the different looks your wedding can take on here in Las Vegas. My style adapts to your vision – there’s not really a single way that I shoot – we can go bright and bold, or pastel and airy. You can be classic and timeless, or you can say “I do” with Elvis as your officiant. It would be my pleasure to connect with you and discuss your vision. ♥

For my clients that are eloping and want to keep things simple (because isn’t that why everyone runs away to Vegas to get married?!) it can often feel overwhelming to choose between so many options. I can share full galleries with you and go over pros and cons for each spot. I can help you find the perfect officiant to celebrate your connection and the perfect florist to fit with your vision. And if you need an Elvis impersonator, I can recommend one of those, too! So, poke around the blog, find some locations that are calling your name, and then call me so we can brainstorm some ideas together!

The Gettos | 2 Hour Wedding | Downtown Elopement

I have a secret. Downtown Las Vegas has won my heart. Hands down. It is full of quirky murals and happy passersby. It’s easy to get to, super walkable and makes for some seriously classic images. Chris and Mary eloped from SoCal and officially tied the knot at A Little White Wedding Chapel – my favorite chapel for elopements, especially when you want to hit up the drive thru. The planning for their session was a whirlwind of trying to find the perfect car to rent, picking out the best backdrops for their post-ceremony session and squeezing in a last minute booking at the Neon Museum. I am always happy to walk my clients through the process and help them get everything booked in so the day goes off without a hitch!

Driving up to make it officially official!

A real, live bouquet toss. Don’t worry, the bouquet was not harmed in the making of this series.

He nailed this jump. On. The. First. Try.

Now it’s your turn! Let’s plan your big day – whether it’s downtown or not – and let’s make it perfect! I’d be honored to photograph your ceremony and then celebrate with even more fun images that you’ll treasure forever! Call me. ♥

Can we get married in the summertime in Las Vegas?

I get asked this question all the time! Is it even possible to marry in Las Vegas in the summertime?

“Is it too hot to get married in July?”

“Will our guests melt in August for an outdoor ceremony?”

The short answer is – maybe! But truthfully, it can be done! You need to plan ahead for the right time of day, as well as the locations you want to visit. A professional can help you navigate the decisions to make sure that you are as comfortable as possible. *raises hand* I’m a professional and would be honored to help you nail down details of your summer wedding. I know there are photographers out there that won’t touch a summer wedding in Vegas, but I love the challenge and the images can be quite stunning to boot.

I wouldn’t recommend a midday ceremony (but then again, I wouldn’t suggest that in the wintertime anyhow, because lighting can be a challenge). Time of day is crucial when it comes to the heat. Late afternoons are best, with early mornings a close second. But not too many people want to get up at 3:30 am for hair and makeup, so late afternoons often win.

Hydrate. Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate. And maybe then hydrate some more. This goes double if you were out late the night before. And triple if you’re coming from the other hemisphere. Australia – I’m looking at you! Bring water with you to the session. Preferably cold water. Or seven cold waters. Whatever floats your boat. But definitely don’t be dehydrated before I see you, or you won’t be having a nice time. And I really pride myself on having a nice time during my sessions.

Plan for transportation. It always helps if you have your own car, or car service. This way, you can cool down in between shots or locations. If you want to hire a car service, I recommend Earth Limos, as they are all inclusive (including fuel and gratuity). So…no surprises!

There are a myriad of potential locations available in the summertime. Most people would avoid the lakebed (pictured above and below) or El Dorado, but I say if you love it, go for it! It can be up to 10 degrees warmer at these spots than it is on the Strip, so be aware that you will need that aforementioned car to cool off in! We can also shoot downtown, or even at the Neon Museum (fave!! – they even have an air conditioned lobby and ice packs to wear around your neck if needed…because they’re awesome).

PS – call Angie of Peachy Keen Unions (pictured above) if you need an officiant. She’s always down to hang out in the heat with us!

Now it’s your turn! There are always lots of details to consider, but I would be thrilled to hop on FaceTime or Skype to go over them and see how we can make your vision work! Click below to shoot me a message and let’s chat!

The Marques’ | 2 hour wedding | The Strip

Michael and Taylor officially tied the knot at San Francisco City Hall before they came to Vegas, and threw a big party here in town for their friends and family to celebrate their union. After a few getting ready pictures in their suite, we headed down to the Strip to walk alongside the Bellagio Fountains before wrapping up our evening on the private patio at Picasso. There are so many different ways to celebrate your marriage here in Las Vegas – and this is yet another example. Lots of my clients envision quick elopement sessions downtown with yours truly as the witness (and yes, we can definitely do that!), but we can also celebrate anniversaries and milestones and anything else you can think of. The beauty of Vegas is that there’s no one way to do it “right.” You can absolutely do it your way, and it would be my honor to capture the day for you, no matter what that means to you and yours.

That ring and those shoes… #sparkleparty

The view from Bellagio never disappoints.

To be honest, they both had great taste in footwear…

Helping his bride untangle her earrings from her hair. True love.

Picasso views don’t disappoint, either.

The Williams’ | 2 Hour Wedding | Las Vegas Strip

The love between Seth and Jamie is damn near palpable. Just look at how they look at each other! I loved hearing their story and capturing a Vegas wedding with a little bit of tradition (like getting ready shots!). Elopements don’t always lend themselves to the detail shots and quieter moments, but this one did – including the most adorable flower girl.

See? Totally adorable!

Helping with the bride’s shoes is a must!

Check out those socks, and of course, Jamie’s glittery Keds! Now it’s your turn – I would be thrilled to capture your wedding day – whether it’s a small elopement for just the two of you or a family affair. Call me and tell me all about the details! ♥

Austin + Katie | Downtown Las Vegas | Pre-Wedding Photo Shoot

Las Vegas photographers have some of the best photo shoot locations, ever. Most people probably think of the Strip when they think of Vegas, but downtown is quickly becoming a total favorite of mine. The alleys and murals and raw feel of the space are actually quite magical. The people are always warm and friendly, and happy to see a fun photo session going down. Read: lots (and lots!) of congratulatory commentary versus the classic “don’t do it” that you might hear on the Strip. Austin and Katie came to Vegas to tie the knot and wanted to take some grungy, rock ‘n roll pics before their ceremony to prove it. We traveled around all the best alleys and avoided the wind as best we could. You never can tell what the weather will do, and these two were game for anything!

When you’re shooting in the alley and people want to take your picture…I told you downtown was cool!

Now it’s your turn! I would be honored to walk around some downtown alleys with you and create some serious magic. Call me and tell me all about your dream shoot and let’s make it happen! Click below to contact me directly. Don’t be shy! ♥

The Coopers | Little White Chapel | 2 Hour Wedding

A favorite combination of mine for small elopements is the Little White Chapel combined with pretty much anything downtown. It’s a great way to have a fun and intimate ceremony, while still getting artistic shots for your wall. Enjoy! ♥

Now it’s your turn – whether you want to get married at a chapel or elsewhere – let’s create some amazing images!
